Bucharest-Ramnicu-Valcea – Horezu – Novaci – Ranca – Obarsia Lotrului – Sugag – Jina – Saliste – Sibiel: Transalpina (360 km) (B, D)

After breakfast at the hotel, we head towards Transalpina, a unique road in Romania. First, stop at the Horezu Monastery, a place of worship listed as a UNESCO heritage site. Horezu Monastery (or Hurezi) was built in 1690 by Constantin Brancoveanu, the prince of Wallachia at the time. The Monastery has been considered a masterpiece of the Brancovenesc style. Famous for its clarity and architectural balance, the richness of its sculpted details and its ornamental paintings. Continuing the road, we head towards Sebes via the village Novaci.
One of the most beautiful roads in Romania is DN 67C, which links Oltenia and Transylvania, between Novaci and Sibiu. Transalpina is the highest road in Romania, with the highest point in Urdele, at an altitude of 2,145 meters. The road was closed to the public for a long time but now the authorities have finished the work and the road is open.
But Transalpina is also known as the “Royal Way” because the first inauguration took place in the presence of King Charles II in 1935. The king and his guards covered the distance between Jina and Novaci in 8 hours. Now the
148.2 km can be covered in 3-4 hours. Now the best part comes: the road is full of serial bends, which go ever higher: Urdele (2145m), Muntinu, Carbunele, Stefanu. To continue on the Royal Route, you must move forward, descending through Obarsia Lotrului (1,361m), crossing on the right side Oasa Dam then Tau Dam. After a few kilometers we arrive at Sugag from where it is only 7 km to Jina. This is the point where Transalpina ends. From there, you will arrive at Sibiel, passing through pretty villages.
The rhythm of life here is accompanied by the sound of “toaca” and that of the church bell tower, especially in summer. Tourists come here to visit not only the church but also the Museum of Icons Painted on Glass, and also to taste traditional dishes among the village residents. Dinner, installation and night at a local’s home (boarding house – each room with individual bathroom) where you will have the opportunity to share local traditions.

Without doubt, Transfagarasan is one of the most beautiful and spectacular roads in Europe. Among the attractions of the area, we can mention the Balea Waterfall, the Balea Glacial Lake, the Vidraru Dam. Dinner and night in a 3* hotel on Transfagarasan.
The Balea Waterfall, another natural wonder is located in the Fagaras Mountains and represents one of the most famous waterfalls in the country. It is located at an altitude of 1,234 meters and the water flows from a height of 68 meters.
The Balea Glacial Lake is a true natural wonder, with its length of 360 meters, width of 240 meters and depth of 11 meters, located at an altitude of 2,034 meters. From 1932, the entire surface of the lake, approximately 180 hectares, was declared a scientific reserve. We must mention that in 2006 the first ice hotel in Europe was built, around the lake, and the hotel is rebuilt every year.
The Vidraru Dam was built between 1961 and 1966. After the completion of the work, it was ranked 5th in Europe and 9th in the world.
